Professor of Digital Humanities

A central research theme of the “Centre for Information Modelling – Austrian Centre for Digital Humanities” (ZIM-ACDH) at the University of Graz, founded in 2008, is the scholarly digital edition as a generalisable method of semantic and formal exploration and analysis of research data in humanities and cultural studies.

 

At the Institute of "Centre for Information Modelling – Austrian Centre for Digital Humanities" at the Faculty of Art and Humanities, the University of Graz is seeking to appoint a

Professor of Digital Humanities

(40 hours per week; selection procedure in accordance with Section 98 of the Universities Act (UG); permanent employment according to the Salaried Employees Act (AngG); expected starting date March 1st 2021)

The post holder will be responsible for representing the subject of Digital Humanities as a whole in research and teaching, and for furthering the national and international research cooperation activities of the Institute. 

We seek applicants with an interdisciplinary orientation and an internationally recognised research profile in the field of Digital Humanities, with a particular emphasis on questions of exploration, modelling and formal representation of cultural heritage. 

The post holder should have the ability to engage critically with computational approaches to subject matter in the humanities (for example in historical and cultural studies), as well as to apply procedures and methods from the field of information science to research in the humanities. 

The successful candidate is expected to be ready to engage in local and international subject-relevant cooperation projects, in particular in Graz and with the Austrian Academy of Sciences, as well as research cooperation in the context of the European research infrastructure projects CLARIN and DARIAH. In addition, collaboration with the Field of Excellence “Dimensions of Europeanisation” at the University of Graz will be expected.  

Moreover, outstanding research and application skills in at least one of the following areas is expected of the candidate:  

• Modelling and analysis of humanities and social science and cultural studies research data,  

• Knowledge engineering and formal representation of knowledge,  

• Application of data science methods to text-based research data.

 

Employment requirements:

  • Austrian or equivalent foreign higher education degree corresponding with the position (doctorate/PhD)
  • Habilitation or equivalent qualification in a field of the humanities or cultural studies
  • Outstanding academic qualifications in research and teaching in the relevant discipline and for the profile of the professorship (commensurate with stage of academic career)
  • Success in attracting subject-specific project grants, particularly where competitively awarded third-party funds are concerned
  • Skills in higher education didactics
  • Skills in the supervision and guidance of early career researchers
  • Professional experience abroad during academic career
  • Management and leadership experience
  • Gender mainstreaming skills
  • Good knowledge of German and English
  • Demonstrable skills in the field of informatics

The successful candidate will be highly motivated, aiming for academic excellence and integrity in research and teaching. He/she will have demonstrated ability to collaborate constructively in a responsible manner and inspire colleagues and students in an interdisciplinary, internationally oriented context.

Salary scheme of the Collective Bargaining Agreement for University Staff (Universitäten-KV): A1

Minimum salary

The minimum remuneration as stated in the Collective Bargaining Agreement is EUR 71.822,80 gross per year. Salary subject to negotiation.
