The Institute of English Studies can look back on a long tradition of philological studies in the English language and English literature. With over 1,500 students, it is one of the largest institutes at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities and collaborates with a number of research centres, including the Centre for Intermediality Studies in Graz (CIMIG) and the Centre for Canada Studies.


The Institute of English Studies at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities is seeking to appoint a

Professor (f/m) of English Literary and Cultural Studies pursuant to §98 of the University Act (UG)

(40 hours per week; permanent employment according to the Austrian Law on Salaried Employment (AngG); expected starting date October 1st 2020 )

The holder of the position will represent the field of English literary and cultural studies from the early modern period up to and including the 18th century in research and teaching, with a particular focus on Shakespearean drama. Teaching responsibilities concern the bachelor's and master's programmes in English and American studies, the English teacher training programme, and the doctoral programme. Research and teaching should focus on literary studies and philologically-oriented cultural studies. In addition, the holder of the position will seek points of contact with existing research collaborations at the institute and at the faculty. Applicants are expected to have a record of excellent research activities and teaching experience in the abovementioned fields.


Requirements for employment

  • Completion of an appropriate university degree at a university in Austria or abroad
  • Habilitation or equivalent qualification in English Literature
  • Excellent academic qualification in research and teaching for the relevant subject (relative to academic age)
  • Very good command of German
  • Competence in one of the following fields: English medieval studies, history and theory of poetry, drama theory, intermediality studies, digital humanities centred on corpus and editorial studies
  • Experience abroad during the scientific career (desirable)
  • Successful acquisition of subject specific projects; in particular competitive third-party funding (desirable)
  • Willingness to assume management tasks and leadership functions (desirable)
  • Support of early career researchers (desirable)

The candidate is expected to demonstrate his/her educational and didactic skills. In addition, we expect gender mainstreaming competence.

Salary scheme of the Universitäten-KV (University Collective Agreement): A1

Minimum salary

The minimum salary according to the classification scheme of the collective agreement is EUR 71.822,80 gross per year (14 monthly salaries). Salary subject to negotiation.
