University Assistant without doctorate

Based on a call on “Unconventional Research on Digital Technologies”, a doctoral thesis should develop a method to identify soil surface communities of plants (so-called biological soil crusts), which widely cover dryland soils all over the world. This algorithm should allow the identification of different communities occurring in varying habitats.

The Institute of Biology is looking for a

University Assistant without doctorate

(30 hours a week; fixed-term employment for the period of 3 years; position to be filled as of now )

Your duties

  • Development of digital identification tool for soil surface communities, based on artificial intelligence and deep learning methods
  • Development of an app, which will allow to use the biocrust identification algorithm to classify photographs taken with the mobile phone
  • Participation in research projects and their initiation
  • Conducting courses and supervising students in thematic relation with the project
  • Participation in the institute's organizational and administrative tasks
  • Possibility to work on a relevant dissertation

Your profile

  • Completed master’s degree in natural sciences
  • Very good knowledge in the field of image analysis
  • Knowledge on artificial intelligence and deep learning methods (desirable)
  • Knowledge in computer programming and app development (desirable)
  • Very good reading and writing skills in English
  • Ability for independent research work
  • Didactic skills for independent teaching (desirable)
  • Organizational skills
  • Competence to work in international and interdisciplinary team
  • High commitment and motivation for scientific work

Classification

Salary scheme of the Universitäten-KV (University Collective Agreement): B1

Minimum salary

The minimum salary as stated in the collective agreement and according to the classification scheme is EUR 2196.80 gross/month. This minimum salary may be higher due to previous employment periods eligible for inclusion and other earnings and remunerations.
