The University of Graz Field of Excellence “Climate Change Graz” offers a highly attractive research and teaching environment, with world leading faculty across the relevant disciplines involved from its schools of social sciences and economics, natural sciences, environmental sciences, and the humanities. The Wegener Center for Climate and Global Change hosts research groups from these fields, providing a stimulating interdisciplinary research environment. You will join a new research team working on Complex System Science and System Transformation led by Prof. Ilona M. Otto. You will work on highly relevant topics in an international environment and you will contribute to solving essential social and environmental challenges. The group will collaborate with academic and business partners abroad. Exchange and research stays and visits at partner institutes will be supported.

The Wegener Center for Climate and Global Change is looking for a

University Assistant without doctorate

(30 hours a week; fixed-term employment for the period of 4 years; position to be filled as of October 1st 2020 )

Your duties

  • Carrying out research in the area of system transformation, human agency, socio-economic inequalities, and complex system science in the Wegener Center for Climate and Global Change, within the research group of Prof. Otto “Social Complexity and System Transformation”, and in close collaboration with the other research groups at the center and the Field of Excellence “Climate Change Graz”
  • Quantitative and qualitative data analysis
  • Dedicated publication activities in innovative climate complex systems research and social sciences or economics areas
  • Interactions with stakeholders and relevant societal actors
  • A possibility to complete a PhD degree
  • Supporting teaching in the bachelor and master programs in Environmental System Sciences; teaching language German and English
  • Participation in organisational and administrative tasks

Your profile

  • Master degree in economics, physics, mathematics, sociology, psychology or a related field
  • An interest in climate change research and policy
  • Experience with analysing large data sets and modelling tools used in human-environment system modelling
  • Programming and data analysis skills, preferably in R and Stata
  • Very good written and spoken German and English skills
  • Structured and goal-oriented thinking
  • Self-initiative and reliability as well as organizational, cooperation and team skills
  • Very good communication skills and enjoying work with people in an interdisciplinary and internationally oriented environment
  • Responsible way of working, resilience and problem solving ability

Our offer


Salary scheme of the Universitäten-KV (University Collective Agreement): B1

Minimum salary

The minimum salary as stated in the collective agreement and according to the classification scheme is EUR 2196.80 gross/month. This minimum salary may be higher due to previous employment periods eligible for inclusion and other earnings and remunerations.
